The great ball of fire you humans call the sun emits a particle commonly known as the photon. When a photon strikes the surface of the Earth they rebound off of its surface as heat energy. In the past the heat would just go out of the atmosphere but now it is different. Greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide and methane trap, absorb and then send the heat energy out in all directions. Global warming is mostly the retaining of heat in our atmosphere.
